History of Ethiopian Leather
Ethiopia’s leather industry is one of the oldest in the world, with traditions spanning centuries. As the leading cattle producer in Africa and among the top ten globally, Ethiopia has long had access to premium hides from cattle, goats, and sheep. Historically, leather was integral to daily life used for baby carriers, drum covers, clothing, and sacred items. The craft has been passed down through generations, and today, Ethiopian artisans blend traditional (vegetable tanning) methods with modern techniques to create high-quality leather goods that reflect cultural pride, durability, and timeless design.
Our Supplier
Our supplier, Natural Leather Products, is a women-owned business in Ethiopia where women make up 60–65% of the workforce. Founded and owned by Rahwa Aregawi Berehe, who has over 15 years of experience in the leather and textile sector, the company produces handcrafted leather bags with a focus on quality, sustainability, and timeless design. Their “Be Clean, Go Green” philosophy emphasizes ethical production and skilled craftsmanship.
